GREELEY, CO – Aims Community College today hosted a community event with Weld County emergency service providers called, “Seize the Opportunity to Build Up Our Community.” The event was part of the Phi Theta Kappa College Project, sponsored by Aims President Dr. Leah L. Bornstein.
Students, employees and community members participated in interactive demonstrations and dialogues with members of the Weld County police department, K-9 Unit, bomb squad, SWAT, Greeley Fire Station 5 and Aims programs and services. Hot chocolate, donuts and other refreshments was provided.
“I am proud that our students value our first responders and wanted to provide an opportunity for us to show our support,” said Aims’ President Dr. Leah L. Bornstein. “Many of northern Colorado’s first responders were trained at Aims, and it was exciting to have them return to campus and demonstrate their work. Additionally, this was a prime opportunity for the community to learn more about the excellent first responder programs available at our Windsor campus.”
The Aims Windsor campus is a full-service location that includes the Automotive and Technology Center and Public Safety Institute, which houses criminal justice, emergency medical services, fire science and medical assisting programs. In addition, students can take general education classes like biology, chemistry, math and history in Windsor. Classes are offered days, nights and weekends. “Phi Theta Kappa wanted an opportunity to show that law enforcement professionals are people just like you and me,” said Tony Burrus, vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa. “We also really wanted to create a positive interaction between emergency service providers and the community because more often than not, most of the interactions we have with police or firefighters are during an emergency situation where we wouldn’t really get the time to know them. This event allowed us to say thank you.”
